NKT and Walsin Lihwa, through their joint venture company Walsin Energy Cable System (WECS), have marked the inauguration of Taiwan's first submarine cable production plant over the weekend. The plant is located in Kaohsiung and marks the beginning of local offshore cable manufacturing in the country. NKT writes in a press release.
The plant covers an area of 231,000 square meters and houses a 50-meter-high extrusion tower. It will supply high and medium voltage cables to Taiwan's growing offshore wind market.
- The inauguration of the WECS plant is an important milestone. Since the partnership was established in 2023, Walsin Lihwa and NKT have combined expertise, culture and vision to build this state-of-the-art plant. With its technical expertise and commitment, NKT is proud to contribute to Taiwan's path towards energy independence and net-zero emissions, says Claes Westerlind, CEO of NKT.
According to WECS, the plant will strengthen Taiwan's energy infrastructure and support the country's renewable energy goals. Commercial production is expected to begin in 2027 after testing and qualification.
