China on Monday called on the United States to lift the tariffs that US President Donald Trump imposed on trading partners around the world over the weekend.

- There are no winners in a trade war, and protectionism leads nowhere, according to a statement from China's Ministry of Commerce.

The US Supreme Court ruled on Friday by a vote of six to three that Trump did not have the authority to impose the global tariffs that shook global trade last year.

Trump's reaction to the Supreme Court ruling was to take the tariff hammer out of the drawer once again. He first announced a global tariff of 10 percent on imported goods, before raising the tariff to 15 percent on Saturday.

China's Ministry of Commerce said it was reviewing the ruling from the US Supreme Court and its implications.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told US media on Sunday that the country's trade agreements with China, the EU and other partners would remain in force despite the ruling from the US Supreme Court.

The new global tariff of 15 percent is expected to take effect on Tuesday and apply for 150 days. Certain products - such as pharmaceuticals - are exempted, however.

Friday's ruling in the US Supreme Court was a major blow to Trump. The highest court in the US has otherwise largely supported Trump on various issues since he took office in the White House early last year.

Trump has extensively used tariffs as a negotiating tool since becoming president. The United States and China - the world's two largest economies - fought an escalating tariff war for several months last year, shaking financial markets and raising fears of inflation and recession in the United States.

At one point, US tariffs on Chinese goods were over 145 percent. The United States and China then signed a trade agreement to put a damper on the escalating tariff war.

Despite US measures aimed at making the United States less dependent on Chinese production, the two countries' economies are dependent on each other.
