As part of the expansion of NKT's Swedish factory in Karlskrona, which will produce cables of up to 640 kV, the Danish cable manufacturer has erected a cable tower of a whopping 200 meters.
The new tower, which will be used to cool the cable insulation, as the cables must hang vertically for proper cooling during production, has now reached the planned height, making it the second highest in the Nordics. This is after an intensive construction process, says Darren Fennell, Executive Vice President and Head of HV Solutions Karlskrona at NKT, in a press release.
- During construction, we had cement delivered around the clock, which enabled the tower to grow by 2.6 meters per day. This is the third tower at the factory in Karlskrona, and the expansion is a result of the record high order backlog we have for projects to strengthen and expand the global electricity grids. The factory will be the world's largest production site for offshore cables, underlining our crucial role in the electrification of large parts of the world. We hope that the tower will become a symbol of the global transition to renewable energy, he says.
The construction of the tower is part of NKT's extensive investment plan in Karlskrona, which also includes a new cable ship. Investments are expected to create around 500 new jobs at the Swedish factory by 2027.
- We are not only a major employer in Karlskrona, but also a key player in the global energy transition. Through our investments, we contribute to building a robust electricity grid in both Sweden and Europe, where we are one of the few companies that can produce the high-voltage cables that are central to building the energy infrastructure of the future, says Darren Fennell.
