AARHUS: Port operator APM Terminals, owned by the Danish shipping giant Maersk, is ready to invest two billion kroner in better utilizing the space at the Port of Aarhus.

This is what the company informs DR.

The announcement comes after a political stop has been put on the planned expansion of the port.

- Now that a decision has been made not to expand the port, it is our task to come up with a solution for how we can best service the space we have available, says CEO of APM Terminals Keith Svendsen to the media.

He expects that the investments can help increase the current capacity by 50 percent. Today, the company handles approximately 750,000 containers annually, writes DR.

On hiatus for a number of years

It was the parties to the settlement agreement behind the expansion of the Port of Aarhus who chose on Wednesday to put the project on hiatus "for a number of years". Instead, it will be up to a new city council after the municipal elections next year to decide whether the project should be resumed.

The Maersk-owned company, which is the largest operator at the port, will, among other things, implement a capacity expansion by placing an extra layer of containers on top of those already at the port. And it will invest in fully automated machines that can be put to work around the clock.

The expansion of the Port of Aarhus has been in the works for many years, but was stopped by the Planning Appeals Board at the end of May. The board upheld a complaint case, as "the minimum requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act for an environmental report have not been met", it was said at the time. At the same time, the assessment suffered from "significant legal deficiencies".

Subsequently, the parties to the settlement in Aarhus City Council said that an external investigation should uncover what had gone wrong in the municipality's work on the expansion. It was said that the municipality still had plans for an expansion of the port. Therefore, the local plan should be revisited.
