The Russian gas company Gazprom has announced that it will stop supplying gas to Ørsted from Wednesday. The Danish company wrote this in a press release on Tuesday afternoon.

Gazprom has decided to turn off the taps because Ørsted has refused to comply with the Russian demand for payment in rubles. According to Ørsted, the company has never been obliged to comply with such demands.

- We at Ørsted stand firm on our refusal to pay in rubles, and we have prepared ourselves, so we expect to continue to be able to supply gas to our customers, says Mads Nipper, CEO of Ørsted, in the statement.

- The situation emphasizes that we in the EU must be independent of Russian gas by accelerating the expansion of renewable energy, he continues.

However, there is no need to worry that there will not be enough gas for the gas boiler at home. There is no direct gas pipeline from Russia to Denmark, writes Ørsted.

- Therefore, Russia will not be able to shut off the direct supply of gas to Denmark, and gas will therefore still be able to reach Denmark, it says.

Do not expect more expensive gas

The gas that Gazprom supplies to Denmark comes through a network of gas pipelines in Europe. Therefore, there are several other customers of gas from Gazprom located between Russia and Denmark. Instead, Ørsted must find others who will sell gas and deliver it to Denmark.

If some of the other customers in the network want to sell gas to Denmark, Gazprom cannot stand in the way of this. Ørsted also does not expect that there will be noticeable costs associated with having to find new suppliers of gas. Ørsted announced this on Monday. The Danish Energy Agency also does not expect it to create problems for the country's gas supply.

- Gazprom's decision does not change the Danish Energy Agency's assessment. We still have gas in Denmark, and we do not expect that the situation will change here and now, says the Danish Energy Agency's director, Kristoffer Böttzauw.

- But Denmark has plans ready if the situation worsens, it says.

Ørsted will be in ongoing dialogue with the Danish authorities. It is confident that the authorities' ongoing assessment is correct.
