The Danish energy company Ørsted is not going to change its mind and will not pay in rubles for gas from the Russian energy company Gazprom.
Instead, Ørsted has prepared for a situation where Gazprom, in response, turns off the gas taps by filling its storage facilities in Denmark and Germany. At the same time, Ørsted estimates that it will be possible to buy gas on the European market instead. Ørsted said this in a press release on Monday.
After Gazprom raised the demand for payment for gas in rubles, Ørsted denied that this would be the case. The Russian company gave a deadline for a response of the end of May - Tuesday - but Ørsted has made up its mind.
- Therefore, there is a risk that Gazprom Export will stop supplying gas to Ørsted, the Danish energy company writes in its press release.
- We believe that this will be a breach of Gazprom Export's obligations under the contract.
Instead, Ørsted must find others who will sell gas and deliver it to Denmark.
Ørsted states that the company is in contact with the Danish authorities. Here, a plan has been drawn up for what will happen if there is not enough gas for all Danish gas customers.
Although Ørsted may have to find new suppliers for the gas to Denmark, the company does not expect that there will be any noticeable costs associated with this. In its press release, Ørsted writes:
- A possible stop in gas deliveries from Gazprom Export has no impact on Ørsted's expectations for the financial year 2022 or on the announced expected investment level for 2022, and it does not affect our strategic ambitions and long-term financial expectations.
Ørsted has previously announced that the money the company earns by selling Russian gas will be used for humanitarian work in Ukraine.
