Former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder is leaving the board of directors of the Russian oil group Rosneft. Schröder is the company's chairman. He announces that it is impossible to continue for another term, the group announced on Friday. Details and the background to the decision are not disclosed, reports Flensborg Avis.

The 78-year-old Schröder is a long-time friend of Russian President Putin. The former chancellor has been under massive pressure. The Bundestag, his own social democratic SPD and the federal government have demanded that he no longer be allowed to lobby for Russian gas and oil companies because of Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine.

Gerhard Schröder also holds leading positions in the pipeline projects Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2. Both pipelines connect Russia and Germany. The completed Nord Stream 2 has not yet been put into operation, and the German government has put the project on hold following the attack on Ukraine.

Schröder has also been a candidate for a position on the board of directors of the Russian gas giant Gazprom, which has a general meeting on June 30. It is currently unknown whether this is still relevant.

On Thursday, the Bundestag took away the state funding for Schröder's office staff and transport from the former politician.
