The Russian gas company Gazprom confirms that it has stopped deliveries to Poland and Bulgaria because the two countries do not want to pay for the gas in rubles.
Gazprom says that supplies will only be resumed when the two EU countries agree to the demand to pay for the gas in rubles. This is reported by Reuters. The Russian government has threatened to cut off gas to the rest of the EU.
Here, the Europeans have maintained that they have entered into contracts with Gazprom for payment in euros and dollars. Russia's demand for payment in rubles is intended to help support the Russian currency at a time when tough sanctions have been imposed on the country for its invasion of Ukraine.
