Equinor and its partners ExxonMobil Brasil, Petrogal Brasil and Pré-sal Petróleo SA (PPSA) have started production from the Bacalhau field in Brazil. The start-up took place on 15 October at 22:56 local time. With more than 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent, Bacalhau is Equinor's largest international offshore project to date. Equinor said in a statement.
- The safe start-up of Bacalhau marks an important milestone for Equinor. The project strengthens our long-term oil and gas production and ensures value creation for decades to come, says Anders Opedal, CEO of Equinor.
Bacalhau is located in the pre-salt zone of the Santos Basin at a depth of over 2,000 meters. The field is operated from a 370-meter long and 64-meter wide FPSO ((Floating Production Storage and Offloading ed.) with a capacity of 220,000 barrels of oil per day. The first phase consists of 19 wells that will gradually be put into operation, while production increases towards 2026.
The field is equipped with combined gas turbines, which reduce CO2 emissions. With an expected intensity of around 9 kg CO2 per boe, Bacalhau sets a new standard for efficient and low-emission production in deep water, Equinor says.
