India has promised to stop buying Russian oil, which is part of the country's energy supply. This is what US President Donald Trump claims after a conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday. The news agencies AFP and AP write.
- He has assured me that oil will not be bought from Russia, Trump said according to AFP.
- It will not happen immediately. It is a process, but that process will be short.
India has not immediately commented on the announcement from the US president.
Trump has long been pushing for India to stop purchasing Russian oil on the grounds that the oil money helps finance Russia's war in Ukraine.
It has been more than three and a half years since Russia invaded the neighboring country, and all previous attempts to stop the war have been in vain.
The US has put pressure on with tariff increases
Russia is the largest supplier of oil to India, which is the world's third-largest importer and consumer of oil. About 35 percent of India's total oil supply comes from Russia.
At the end of August, Trump doubled the US import duty on Indian goods from 25 to 50 percent due to India's purchases of Russian oil.
- They don't care how many people in Ukraine are killed by the Russian war machine. Because of this, I will significantly increase the duty that India pays to the United States, Trump said at the time.
It is not immediately clear whether Trump intends to lower the duty on Indian goods after Wednesday's conversation. On Wednesday, the US president called the Indian prime minister a good man.
- I don't want to ruin his political career, Trump said of Modi, according to AFP.
75-year-old Modi has been prime minister of India since 2014.
- I have followed India for many years. It is a great country, and every year they get a new leader. My friend has been in office for a long time now, says Trump.
