Danish District Heating wants a clear message for Danish homeowners with gas boilers. In a new political proposal "Udfasning af gas i den danske rumopvarmning", the organization calls for an end date to be announced for gas delivery to households in areas with district heating or approved district heating projects. The goal is to support the green transition and ensure that natural gas is phased out in time. This is what Dansk Fjernvarme writes.
Since 2022, many Danish households have already replaced their gas boilers with district heating, but the organization warns that this development may stagnate without new political initiatives. The proposal therefore contains a number of recommendations for how the phase-out can continue towards 2035.
- If we are to achieve the goal of a green transition of the heating supply and at the same time make ourselves independent of Russian natural gas, which is still flowing in our pipeline network, new political statements and tools are needed to continue the phase-out of natural gas, says Kim Mortensen, director of Danish District Heating, in a statement.
Currently, there are around 270,000 private gas consumers in Denmark. Approximately 202,000 of them live in areas where district heating has been planned or approved. According to figures from the Ministry of Climate and the Danish Council of Local Government, 74 per cent of of the households that deregistered their gas boilers in 2024, to district heating.
More clear recommendations to push the phase-out
The organization proposes that the municipalities be given the opportunity to send a "clear message" letter to citizens in these areas with information about a politically determined date for the shutdown of the gas supply. The shutdown must be planned by the municipalities and carried out by Evida.
Danish District Heating also recommends that the Climate Agreement from 2022 be revisited and reconfirmed as early as 2025 to send a clear signal of political will for the transition.
At the same time, the district heating pool must be both extended and increased to create an economic incentive for conversion - the assessment is that it can phase out up to 10,000 gas boilers annually. Finally, the organization calls on Denmark to follow the examples from Germany and the Netherlands and lift the gas companies' delivery obligations to enable a controlled shutdown of the gas network. According to Danish District Heating, a natural gas-free heating supply by 2035 requires clear frameworks and strong political decisions.
- Specifically, we recommend that municipalities be given the opportunity to announce a clear politically determined end date for natural gas to households in gas areas. From there, citizens in the areas can choose between getting district heating or investing in a heat pump. Only in this way can we be sure that we will be natural gas-free in 2035, says Kim Mortensen, director of Danish District Heating.
