On Monday afternoon, Tyra II was officially inaugurated. But in fact, gas has been flowing – with interruptions – from the North Sea for more than a year. The inauguration of Tyra II was marked by a symbolic turn of the handwheel of a large gas tap at TotalEnergies’ building in Esbjerg - assisted by Ole Hansen, Director of TotalEnergies EP Denmark, Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, as well as Minister of Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M) and Minister of Climate, Energy and Energy Lars Aagaard (M).

The “now open” gas valve marks the end of TotalEnergies’ and the Danish Underground Consortium’s (DUC) reconstruction of Denmark’s largest offshore project ever. Tyra II makes Denmark self-sufficient – and once again a net exporter of natural gas.

To achieve this, 27 billion kroner has been invested. But it is not only the size of the investment that is remarkable, stated Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies since 2014, at the inauguration ceremony.

- This is not just a platform. It is a symbol of innovation. It is not just energy. It is also a symbol of security and independence, said Patrick Pouyanné, who is colloquially known at Total as “big P”.

From big P to little Lars

In his speech, Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M) also emphasized the importance of self-sufficiency and security. Because self-sufficiency is also security policy. Before Russia's attack on Ukraine, EU countries imported 40 percent of their gas from Russia.

- Today it is 11 percent. The goal is zero percent. The reopening of Tyra brings us one step closer to zero, said Lars Løkke Rasmussen.

Tyra II is Denmark's largest gas field and one of Europe's most significant energy projects, said Ole Hansen, Director of TotalEnergies EP Denmark:

- When we can now deliver twice as much gas as Denmark's own consumption, we are not only contributing to stable supply in Denmark, but also to keeping the wheels turning in the rest of Europe. It is a strong signal that we can ensure gas supply closer to Europeans and with a lower CO2 footprint than the alternatives, he said.

The reconstruction of Tyra has required investments of 27 billion kroner and has been carried out by around 1,500 employees and suppliers - both local and international. The project has been characterized by high complexity, and the result is one of the world's most advanced offshore gas installations of 35,000 tons - equivalent to five Eiffel Towers.

- It is historic for Denmark and for the North Sea. Tyra has become a reality through around 46 million working hours and an exceptional effort from our people in Esbjerg and offshore. It is proof that the North Sea industry's competencies are world-class - and that they continue to play a central role in Europe's energy security, says Ole Hansen.

Tyra can deliver up to 2.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year - equivalent to six percent of the EU's own production and one percent of total European consumption. At current gas prices, this represents an annual value creation of a double-digit billion, which strengthens both Denmark's economy and Europe's energy supply.
