The Danish Climate Council launches new tool to track climate efforts

The Climate Council is launching a new overview with almost 20 indicators that will provide an ongoing overview of whether Denmark is on the right track towards the climate goals.

The Danish Climate Council has published a new overview with almost 20 indicators that show how climate policy is being translated into action.

The indicators cover, among other things, electric cars, shallow soils and oil consumption and are intended to provide an ongoing impression of whether developments are going in the right direction.

Chairman Peter Møllgaard emphasizes that adopted decisions do not in themselves ensure reductions.

- With the new overview, we can better monitor whether we are moving in the right direction - and whether it is going fast enough, he says.

The figures show both progress and challenges:

Almost 500,000 electric cars are now on the roads, but in 2024, virtually no carbon-rich land was removed, even though the target is 140,000 hectares by 2030.

- If slow development in one or more areas threatens the achievement of the target in 2030, then new political initiatives must be implemented so that we get up to speed,” says the chairman.

The overview will be continuously expanded, and the Climate Council invites the public to make suggestions for new indicators. It will be a supplement to the council's annual status report, which continues to compile a deeper analysis of the government's climate efforts.
