ESBJERG: Esbjerg Municipality has received a dispensation from the Minister for Cities and Rural Areas Morten Dahlin (V) to change an area north of Tjæreborgvej from a rural zone to an urban zone. This enables a new dry port of 53 hectares, which will be used to support the growing wind industry and secure the Port of Esbjerg's role as a central shipping port for offshore wind. The municipality states this in a statement.

The area, which is located east of Esbjerg and has previously been planned as a nature and agricultural area, but with the dispensation it will now be allocated to port-related businesses. The dry port will function as an extension of the port and be used for storage and handling of large components, which will later be transported to the ships.

- The dry port at Tjæreborg is part of streamlining port operations, so it is particularly pleasing that Esbjerg Municipality has succeeded in getting through with the overall permits so early in the process. This will entail a port expansion of more than 500,000 square meters, says Dennis Jul Pedersen, CEO of the Port of Esbjerg.

Will relieve residents on the wind turbine route

At the same time, the expansion opens up a new access road that can relieve Krogsgårdsvej, where residents have long been bothered by heavy special transports. Both the prospect of relieving these citizens and the new opportunities for the Port of Esbjerg bring joy to the mayor's office in the West Jutland municipality.

- This is a milestone for Esbjerg. With the minister's permission, we can create space for the future needs of the wind industry. It cements our role as Denmark's Energy Metropolis. In addition, the dry port may affect the logistics around the port area and thus also the current special transport route. The port will have the opportunity to establish a new access to the area, and with the new access road, future transports can be routed around Krogsgårdsvej, so that residents no longer have to have heavy wind turbine transports close to their homes, says Mayor Jesper Frost Rasmussen (V).

Esbjerg Municipality will now prepare municipal and local plans and carry out the necessary environmental assessments. The area will be reserved for companies associated with the port and the green transition, including offshore wind and related industries.
