The future of the Hesselø Offshore Wind Farm is currently unclear after the Danish Energy Agency recently put the tender for the project on hold. The reason was that Energinet had discovered that the seabed in the designated area for the wind farm is not as suitable as initially assumed.

The postponement may give renewed courage to a group of fishermen and other citizens who are fighting to have the wind farm moved, as they believe the current location is a threat to the fishing industry.

The latest move they have taken in the fight against the current location of the offshore wind farm is to create a citizens' proposal with the title: "Proposal for changing the location of the Hesselø Offshore Wind Farm in Kattegat, so that coexistence between local fisheries and offshore wind turbines is ensured".

"If the current location of the offshore wind farm is maintained, the remaining available areas where reasonable fishing for Norway lobster can be conducted in the southern Kattegat will be so few that the fishery will effectively be discontinued. The fishermen will suffer significant losses, as they no longer have access to the good fishing grounds," reads, among other things, the motivation for the citizens' proposal.

Difficult to get through to politicians

The fishermen's proposal is a location south of the one that is currently being planned: East of Hesselø and closer to land. The fishermen believe that the turbines will bother them less in that area.

- It is difficult to get through to politicians once they believe they have made the right decision. Now it turns out that the seabed may not be suitable for installing wind turbines in the area they want to place them. So why not immediately make a decision that this wind farm is not suitable to be located in this area - which we have always said will hit us quite hard, says Gilleleje's fish auctioneer, Lasse Nordahl, who has submitted the proposal to SN.dk.

The citizens' proposal has so far obtained 588 supporters. It has until January 5 to reach the 50,000 signatories necessary for the proposal to be taken up in the Danish Parliament.

Hesselø is planned to have an effect of between 800-1,200 MW, and the current location is in Hesselø Bay, at least 30 km from the coast of North Zealand.
