Vestas is close to its largest order ever

Vestas, with its upcoming giant wind turbine V236-15.0 MW, has been chosen as the preferred supplier for BP and Equinor's American projects Empire Wind 1 and 2, a possible order of 2.1 GW.

Vestas' upcoming flagship wind turbine V236-15.0 MW will apparently be installed in one of the largest offshore wind turbine projects in the United States off New York.

Thus, the BP and Equinor joint venture behind the offshore wind farms Empire Wind 1 and Empire Wind 2 has chosen the Danish wind turbine manufacturer as its preferred supplier, Vestas said in a press release.

The order is for 138 wind turbines with a capacity of 15 MW each. This corresponds to a total contract of 2.1 gigawatts (GW).

- We are proud to enter into a partnership with Equinor and BP as the preferred supplier for Empire Wind 1 and 2, and to be able to deliver our V236-15.0 MW turbine to help New York meet its ambitious goals for offshore wind, says Laura Beane, head of Vestas North America division.

Equinor is also pleased with the agreement, and the company makes no secret of the fact that it is the size of Vestas' new turbine that has helped secure the order.

- We are pleased to have chosen a preferred supplier for what will be the largest contract on the Empire Wind project. The turbines have the largest available installed capacity on the market, and this matches well with the ambitions we have for the project. We have chosen the technology that provides the greatest value for Empire Wind from the world's largest wind turbine manufacturer. It is cutting-edge technology that is pushing the boundaries of wind power, says Arne Sigve Nylund, Group Director for Projects, Drilling and Procurement at Equinor.

Analyst: Vestas is well on its way

According to Jacob Pedersen, head of equity research at Sydbank and who follows Vestas closely, the order from Equinor and BP will be the largest deal ever for Vestas, if it becomes a final contract.

- It really is a giant orange that has fallen into Vestas' turban, he says.

The latest deal shows that Vestas' offshore wind rate is well on its way, assesses Jacob Pedersen. Previously, the V236-15.0 turbine has also secured Vestas' position as preferred supplier for the 900 MW German offshore wind farm He Dreiht.

- In order to be successful at sea, you first need to land some agreements, and this is proof that Vestas can win some of the really big orders. Offshore wind projects are larger than onshore, and this also entails a different type of risk for Vestas, and the company must now prove that it is able to handle that, he says.

Vestas recently announced that it will install a prototype of the V236-15.0 MW turbine in Østerild next year.

The US is only in its infancy for offshore wind turbines, but US President Joe Biden set a goal earlier this year that there should be around 30 GW of offshore wind in the US by 2030. That alone will be able to supply around ten million households with electricity.
