The first monopile foundations have now been installed on the Baltica 2 offshore wind project in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea. This marks the start of offshore construction work on what will be Poland's largest offshore wind farm with a capacity of 1.5 GW. This was announced by Ørsted in a press release.
Baltica 2 is being developed in a 50/50 partnership between Ørsted and the Polish energy company PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna. The offshore wind farm will be built approximately 40 km from the Polish coast near Ustka and is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2027.
Van Oord is responsible for the installation of a total of 111 monopiles. Of these, 107 will be used as foundations for the wind turbines, while four will be used for offshore transformer stations. The installation work on the foundations is expected to continue until the fourth quarter of 2026. The actual installation of the wind turbines will be carried out by Cadeler and Fred. Olsen Windcarrier.
The monopiles are approximately 100 meters long, have a diameter of more than 10 meters and weigh an average of 1,500 tons. The foundations are adapted to the individual locations in the offshore wind farm.
- We are pleased to announce that we are now starting the construction work at sea with the installation of the first monopiles on Baltica?2.?Poland and Europe need offshore wind to strengthen their energy security. It is more important than ever to build a safe, robust and sustainable Europe. I would like to thank the Polish government for its support, and I would also like to thank our partner, PGE, for the cooperation that has brought us this far, says Rasmus Errboe, CEO of Ørsted.
The Baltica 2 offshore wind farm will consist of 107 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines with a capacity of 14 MW each. According to the companies, the plant is expected to be able to produce electricity equivalent to the consumption of 2.5 million Polish households.
Baltica 2 has entered into a 25-year inflation-linked contract for difference with the Polish state. The nominal starting price is set based on an agreed price in 2021 of 71.82 euros per MWh, which is adjusted for inflation until commissioning in 2027. After that, the price will be adjusted annually.
