US President Donald Trump has given the EU until July 4 to fulfill its part of the trade deal that was signed with the US last summer. If it does not happen, the US will impose higher tariffs on the EU. Trump wrote this on his social media, Truth Social, after a conversation with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
- I have been waiting patiently for the EU to fulfill its part of the historic trade deal that we agreed on in Turnberry, Scotland, the largest trade deal ever!, Trump wrote.
The trade deal was signed between the US President and von der Leyen at a meeting in Scotland in July 2025.
- A promise was made that the EU would fulfill their part of the deal and, as agreed, reduce their tariffs to zero! I agreed to give her until our country's 250th birthday, or their tariffs will unfortunately immediately increase to much higher levels, Trump writes.
The EU has made "good progress" towards ratifying the tariff agreement with the US by early July, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday after a "very good" phone call with Trump.
- We remain fully committed - on both sides - to implementation. Good progress is being made towards tariff reductions by the beginning of July, says von der Leyen on X.
The US marks July 4th as the 250th anniversary of the founding of the country.
Tariff of 15 percent
The trade agreement from July 2025 set a US tariff of 15 percent on most EU exports.
Last Friday, he announced that he would raise US tariffs on cars and trucks from the EU to 25 percent. If this is the case, it will hit the already struggling European car industry in Germany, among others, hard. Trump also accused the EU in this connection of not complying with the tariff agreement from last summer.
The EU has not yet finished implementing the trade agreement, but it will happen, von der Leyen said on Tuesday.
- An agreement is an agreement. And we have an agreement. The essence of it is growth, common rules and reliability. Now both parties are implementing it, said the EU Commission President.
Despite the threat of higher tariffs, Trump states in his post that he had a good conversation with Ursula von der Leyen. They allegedly talked about several topics - including Iran.
- I had an excellent phone call with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
- We discussed many topics, including that we completely agree that Iran must never get a nuclear weapon, writes Trump.
