Energinet changes line routing in South Zealand after local criticism

Energinet is now presenting a new proposal for the route for the planned 400 kV connection between Køge and Vordingborg. The new proposal moves the overhead lines closer to the Sydmotorvejen motorway after criticism and requests from citizens and politicians in South Zealand. Energinet writes.

The new connection is part of the New Electricity Network South Zealand, Lolland and Falster project, which also includes new 220 kV cables to Lolland and Falster and three new high-voltage stations.

- The project is an important part of the green transition. There is a need for us to continue expanding the electricity grid so that we can maintain security of supply and transport the rapidly increasing amounts of green electricity, both to and from South Zealand, Lolland and Falster, says Oddleif A. Nielsen, main project manager at Energinet.

Energinet presented the original proposal in the spring of 2025 and has since held seven meetings with citizens and stakeholders. The company has received approximately 125 comments on the project, many of which have concerned moving the overhead lines or using underground cables to a greater extent.

According to Energinet, it is not possible to establish the entire connection as underground cables, but the new route must take greater account of requests to move the overhead lines away from open land and closer to existing infrastructure. The new proposal also means that more homes will be affected by overhead lines close to homes compared to the original proposal.

- We greatly appreciate the many comments we have received, and we have reviewed them very thoroughly. As we have explained in our dialogue meetings, it is not possible for us to establish the entire connection as underground cables, but we have listened to local wishes. For example, there has been a great desire from citizens and politicians in local areas to move the overhead lines away from open countryside and to have them located closer to the Southern Motorway, just as there has been a great desire to have more consideration given to impacts at Præstø Fjord, says Christoffer Lilleholt, Department Manager at Energinet.

Political agreement enables new alignment

The government and a broad majority in the Danish Parliament entered into an agreement in February 2026 that gave Energinet the opportunity to adjust the alignment so that the project more closely follows existing infrastructure such as the Southern Motorway.

Energinet also states that the company will convene new public dialogue meetings in the affected municipalities of Køge, Faxe, Næstved and Vordingborg, where citizens will again have the opportunity to submit comments on the project.

The new connection will be almost 45 kilometers long and thus slightly shorter than the original proposal. About 14 kilometers of the connection will be established as underground cables.
