Sweden pauses power cable to Denmark after EU conflict

The expansion of the electricity cable will be put on hold after disagreement over bottleneck revenues, says Swedish minister.

The Swedish government is putting the expansion of an electricity cable connection to Denmark on hold after a conflict in the EU. This is what the Swedish Minister of Energy, Ebba Busch, says, according to SVT.

The conflict is about Swedish bottleneck revenues. When electricity is sold from a low-price to a high-price area, bottleneck revenues are created. The conflict is about how the money should be spent.

According to the EU Commission's so-called "grid package" from December last year, 25 percent of the money that member states earn in bottleneck revenues must be used for EU-funded energy projects. The package was presented by the Danish Energy Commissioner, Dan Jørgensen.

For Sweden, this is about many billions of kroner. In March, the message came that Sweden does not have to share the money with other countries. But in the ongoing negotiations, a new conflict has arisen over how the money can be used, reports the news agency TT.

Sweden wants to use the revenue to expand production capacity and not just to expand the electricity grids. But according to TT, there are signs that the Commission will not agree to this. The Swedish government's response is therefore that it will not invest in new cables.

- We are withdrawing Konti-Skan Connect to Denmark and putting the project on hold until the EU listens to us, says Ebba Busch according to TT.

This is a new electricity cable between southwestern Sweden and Jutland in Denmark, which will replace two cables that exist there today. The two cables - Konti-Skan 1 and 2 - were put into service in 1965 and 1988 respectively.

Ritzau is trying to get a comment from the Danish energy authorities and from EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen.
