Vestas is now inviting its offshore competitors to dance. On Wednesday, the Danish wind turbine manufacturer, which recently took offshore under its wing again with the acquisition of MHI Vestas, announced that the company plans to launch a giant offshore wind turbine with an output of 15 MW.
The turbine will be named V236-15.0 MW and with its output it surpasses and matches the turbines of its competitors. GE Renewable Energy currently has a 13 MW turbine on the market, which will be upgraded to 14 MW in the long term. Siemens Gamesa has announced plans for an offshore wind turbine with a capacity of 15 MW.
The V236-15.0 MW turbine can provide 65 percent higher annual energy production than Vestas' current offshore turbine of the type V174-9.5 MW.
- Our new offshore turbine is a great achievement for Vestas. It marks a major leap forward in a very important journey, says Vestas CEO, Henrik Andersen, about the offshore wind turbine and continues:
- Offshore wind will play an integral role in the growth of wind energy, and the V236-15.0 MW will be a driving force in this development by lowering energy cost levels and thereby making our customers more competitive in offshore tenders in the future.
With a rotor area of 43,000 square meters, the V236-15.0 MW sets a new world record. The turbine will be able to deliver approximately 80 GWh per year, which is equivalent to 20,000 households' electricity consumption and save the atmosphere over 38,000 tons of CO2, Vestas informs.
- With the V236-15.0 MW, we are raising the bar when it comes to technological innovation and industrialization in the wind industry, says Anders Nielsen, chief technology officer at Vestas and continues:
- This new offshore platform forms a solid foundation for our future products and updates.
The first V236-15.0 MW is expected to be installed in 2022, while series production of the turbine is expected to start in 2024.
