Siemens Gamesa has just launched the world's largest offshore wind turbine model, the SG 14-222 DD.

The new wind turbine model will have a capacity of 14 MW, which can be optimized to 15 MW with Siemens Gamesa's Power Boost function. The SG 14-222 DD will have 108-meter-long blades and a total wingspan of 222 meters.

A single one of the upcoming giant wind turbines will be able to produce electricity for 18,000 homes, and it will save 1.4 tons of CO2 during its lifetime, Siemens Gamesa writes on its website.

- We have agreed that bigger is better, says Markus Tacke, director of Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy.

The upcoming model will produce 25 percent more energy than Siemens Gamesa's current SG 11.0-200 DD.

A prototype will be ready next year, while the new wind turbine is expected to be ready for commercial use in 2024.

GE Renewable presented its Haliade-X 12 MW last year, which has so far been known as the world's largest wind turbine.
