US President Donald Trump expects to reduce US tariffs on imports of goods from China. In return, he expects China to commit to limiting the flow of chemicals used to produce fentanyl to the US. Trump said this on Wednesday night, according to the Reuters news agency.

Trump is currently in Asia, where he is visiting various countries. The president's announcement last night came while he was on his way on Air Force One from Japan to South Korea. He is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday in South Korea.

- I expect to lower it (the import tariff, ed.) because I believe that they (China, ed.) will help us with the situation around fentanyl, Trump said according to the AFP news agency, adding: China will cooperate with US authorities on fentanyl.

The meeting between Trump and Xi will take place alongside a summit of the Asian Economic Cooperation Organization, Apec. Trump expects that he and the Chinese president will be able to resolve what he calls many problems.

- I think we will have a great meeting with President Xi of China, and many problems will be resolved, he said, according to AFP on board Air Force One.

The meeting between Trump and Xi came about after a trade war between the world's two largest economies erupted into full swing when China recently imposed new restrictions on the export of rare earths.

This immediately prompted Trump to warn that he would impose a 100 percent tariff on top of the approximately 57 percent already imposed on imports from China.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated on Sunday that a preliminary agreement had been reached with China to defuse the trade war between the two countries.

Trump has previously said that in addition to trade, the two leaders will also discuss Taiwan. However, according to Reuters, the US president said on Wednesday night that he is still not sure whether he will turn Taiwan over to Xi.
