When you go around the subcontractors within renewable energy production, he is the members' favorite. He is Green Power Denmark's deputy CEO Jan Hylleberg. He was also a darling at the conference Sydjysk Eksport '24 in Esbjerg.
- We are in a completely new place. There is no longer a climate discussion; there is an energy discussion, says Jan Hylleberg, who elaborates:
- Europe has to spend an insane amount of money on defense, climate and health. That is why the green transition has been given a completely new role.
Hydrogen pipe or CCS
But the very fact that there is a great focus can end up being a problem.
- We are focusing on short-term solutions because the 2030 climate goals must be achieved, he says of Denmark's goal to reduce the country's CO2 emissions by 70 percent. in 2030.
But Green Power Denmark would rather see work being done to get a hydrogen pipe connection to Germany. It is a connection that the green industry sees as an opportunity to use wind turbine power for hydrogen production. There is demand for green hydrogen in Germany, and that would open up opportunities for Danish exports.
- The hope is a hydrogen pipe and an electricity cable. It is now – not in February or March, explains Jan Hylleberg, who also has an explanation for the government's hesitation:
- We lack that hydrogen pipe because the money is being spent on CCS.
Only two European manufacturers of offshore turbines
It is also pretty clear that there will be no more turbines in the North Sea as long as there is no hydrogen production with sales opportunities in a hydrogen pipe to Germany.
- There are great opportunities for offshore wind in Europe in the North Sea due to the shallow water depth, he says of a particularly good potential in Europe.
But in the midst of that potential, a danger lurks again that could end up becoming geopolitical for a while if the turbines no longer come from the EU.
- Only Vestas and Siemens Gamesa supply offshore turbines; the rest comes from China, says Jan Hylleberg and emphasizes:
- That's the one thing you should take away from here today.
The American election that ended up appointing Donald Trump as the next president is expected to have consequences for the green transition, both in the USA and perhaps even in the EU. But here Green Power Denmark's director can reassure a little.
- Trump can delay the green transition – he can't stop it, Jan Hylleberg states very confidently.
