Good conditions for wind measurements are important for testing and certifying new wind turbines at Test Center Østerild. The trees in the test center area affect the quality of these measurements, as they affect the wind field in front of the turbines.
Therefore, DTU, Vestas and Siemens have decided to cut down a forest area at the test center. This is to ensure that we can continue to deliver accurate measurements that are internationally competitive, DTU states in a press release.
- The wind turbine manufacturers test the largest wind turbines in the world in Østerild. They do this because we have fantastically good wind conditions, which enable fast and precise testing of the turbines. With the felling of the forest, we are now ensuring that test measurements are even better, explains Deputy Director Peter Hjuler Jensen from DTU Wind Energy.
Specifically, this concerns 146 hectares of forest west of wind turbine sites 6, 7, 8 and 9. The felling will take place within the framework for forest felling, as contained in the Act on the Test Center Østerild. Furthermore, replacement forest must be established corresponding to approximately 1.7 times the forest felling that will occur. This means that almost 250 hectares of new forest must be established.
In addition to better testing facilities, the felling is expected to be good for biodiversity in the long term.
