Ship anchor has damaged submarine cable to Bornholm

Energinet has inspected the submarine cable between Bornholm and Sweden and sees signs of damage caused by ship anchors.

It is probably a ship's anchor that has damaged the submarine cable between Bornholm and Sweden. This is the conclusion of Energinet in a press release.

On Saturday morning at 06.17, Bornholm was hit by a major power outage that was localized to the submarine cable. This meant that the island's own electricity production was started while the power cable was examined for faults. On Sunday, the cable was inspected, and the fault was localized at a point 17 kilometers from Sweden and 26 kilometers from Bornholm.

Underwater photos have been taken, and they show clear damage to the cable's protective sheath. Damage that, according to Energinet, probably originated from a ship's anchor. Energinet is now repairing the cable.

- We have immediately started repairing the cable - we need to have the damaged part cut off and a replacement piece inserted. We have spare parts ready, but we cannot yet say when the cable will be back in operation - it depends on weather conditions, among other things. It must be calm at sea so that we can pull the cable to the surface and carry out the repair, says Steffan Ladegaard Morrison, area manager at Energinet.

Damaged in the same place as before

The submarine cable has previously been hit by similar damage. In both 2012 and 2017, there was a power outage as a result of damage to the submarine cable. Both times, the damage was caused by ships. In 2017, it took 19 days to repair the cable.

To reduce the risk of anchor damage to the cable, Energinet decided in 2018 to flush the cable into the seabed on the part of the route where there had previously been a problem. It is on this section, where the cable was flushed into the seabed, that Saturday's short circuit occurred.

Saturday's power outage on Bornholm lasted until 12.26, when all consumers had power again. The island continues to be supplied by the island's own electricity production.
