While Vattenfall, which is behind the offshore wind farms Vesterhav Nord and Syd, has chosen the Port of Hvide Sande as the service port for the offshore wind farms, Siemens Gamesa, which will supply the wind turbines in the Vesterhav Nord wind farm, will use the Port of Thyborøn when the company will manage the installation and commissioning of the 21 SG 8.0-167 DD offshore wind turbines in the wind farm.
Wind turbine manufacturers have thus entered into a contract to lease port facilities with quay facilities for two crew vessels, CTVs, during the installation period of the Vesterhav Nord offshore wind farm. Siemens Gamesa is moving into existing office and warehouse facilities leased by Thyborøn Stevedore, Thyborøn Port informs in a press release.
- Operational reliability is crucial and a short sailing distance to the offshore wind farm is of great importance for an efficient and safe installation. The Port of Thyborøn has a good geographical location for the offshore wind farm, and our team will be able to navigate the port safely, in all weather conditions, during the entire installation, says Lasse Friis, construction project manager for the North and South West at Siemens Gamesa.
Since 2017, the Port of Thyborøn has had dedicated port facilities for both installation and operation of offshore wind farms in the North Sea, and has, among other things, focused on obtaining relevant ISO certifications. This is not the first time that Siemens Gamesa has installed an offshore wind farm from the Port of Thyborøn. The installation of the Nissum Bredning offshore wind farm, which is operated from Thyborøn to this day, was also carried out from the Port of Thyborøn.
- Siemens Gamesa has chosen a setup where it can work uninterrupted and focus on running the installation project. With their choice of quay exclusivity, the technicians always know exactly where the vessel will be when they arrive in port, and they move into a quay facility from which there is easy access from their vessels to the office and warehouse building. We are very pleased to be able to offer Siemens Gamesa these work teams and meet their expectations, says Tine Jensen Le Breton, who has been the head of the offshore wind energy segment at Thyborøn Port since 2017.
Installation is underway
The first stages of the installation of Vesterhav Nord, which is being built 8.5 km off Thyborøn, are in full swing. The project will be 180 MW, and the offshore wind farm will deliver power equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 180,000 Danish households.
The initial preparations for the cable laying have already been made. The vessels Astrea and Aethra have been operating from Thyborøn Port since May and are well underway with the removal of rocks in the cable route to the offshore wind farm.
In the spring of 2023, the foundations will be installed, and Siemens Gamesa will then install their 8.4 MW wind turbines on the foundations. The offshore wind farm is expected to be commissioned during the fall of 2023.
