Ørsted criticized: We are cheating ourselves with biomass as green energy

Experts raise doubts about the sustainability of wood biomass
5. DEC 2024 9.05

Danish energy companies such as Ørsted are using wood biomass as part of the green transition. But experts and studies are raising doubts about whether the practice meets sustainability requirements. This is reported by TV2.dk.

- We are deceiving ourselves if we think it is climate neutral, says Professor Jens-Christian Svenning, who believes that wood biomass is often used where it could be of greater use elsewhere.

A study from Operation X has documented that large trees that could be used for timber are instead converted into wood pellets. Professor emeritus Mark Harmon believes that much of the wood imported to Denmark could be used better:

– Most of the logs could have been used as timber or for paper.

However, Ørsted rejects the criticism and emphasizes that the biomass complies with the legislation.

– The claim that some of Ørsted's suppliers use other than residual products is undocumented, the company writes.

The criticism is supported by Kåre Press-Kristensen from Green Global Future, who calls the biomass industry "big business" that does not always ensure proper control.

Denmark is one of the EU countries that uses the most biomass per capita, and the Climate Council recommends a reduction in use.

– We burn too much wood biomass in Denmark and should set a better example, says Peter Møllgaard, head of the Climate Council.
