ODENSE: Space is tight at the Port of Odense, and therefore the port acquired a large area in 2022 that previously constituted the closed experimental horticulture at Årslev on Midtfyn. Here, 4-5 billion. DKK will be invested in 'Odense Dry Port', where the area will be developed into a high-tech and sustainable logistics hub.

On Thursday, the next step in that ambition was presented. Thus, the port has pointed to the engineering company WSP Danmark and the architectural firm Gottlieb Paludan Architects as the winner of a project competition for the master plan for the upcoming Odense Dry Port. The proposals have been assessed based on four main criteria with a focus on logistics, the site's design and identity, sustainability measures and economic feasibility, Odense Port, which is owned by Odense Municipality, states in a statement.

- It has been impressive to see the wealth of ideas, thoroughness and empathy for the task contained in each individual proposal, which has now become a comprehensive plan with the location of roads, buildings and outdoor areas for the future Dry Port in Årslev. Therefore, we would like to thank all participating teams for the great effort and for the professionally worked out projects with many good visions, thoughts and considerations for the future Dry Port in Årslev, says Carsten Aa, CEO of Odense Havn A/S.

Planned as a whole from the beginning

Odense Dry Port extends over an area of 1.1 million square meters and is planned to accommodate just over 500,000 square meters of buildings. The establishment of Denmark's largest logistics hub will ensure stable supply chains for customers at the Port of Odense, many of whom produce vital parts for the green transition.

While many logistics centers are being expanded with ongoing sprouting, Odense Havn A/S will have the opportunity to plan the new Dry Port in its entirety from the beginning.

- The establishment of Odense Dry Port gives us a completely unique opportunity to design the area from scratch, and with a master plan we ensure optimal utilization of the many square meters in Denmark's largest logistics hub, says Carsten Aa.

Will free up space at the Port of Odense in Munkebo

The overall purpose of Odense Dry Port is that customers at the Port of Odense, who among other things produce vital parts for the large offshore wind turbines, will have a better opportunity to keep up with demand by ensuring large storage capacity close to the production facilities.

At the same time, it will free up some space for production at the Port of Odense's areas in Munkebo, where the occupancy rate of buildings in 2023 was 98, and the number of leased sq m to wind companies increased by 18.5 percent.

- With Odense Dry Port, we can move some of the storage facilities and free up space for production at the port in Munkebo, but we can already see that it is not enough. That is why we are also working on a plan for how the Port of Odense of the future can best be developed, so that we can hopefully create the framework for the production of offshore wind turbines to increase fivefold, so that we at the Port of Odense can raise the capacity for installation from one to five GW of offshore wind annually, says Carsten Aa, CEO, Odense Havn A/S.

The first buildings are expected to be completed in Odense Dry Port at the end of 2027. In the coming years, the preparation of the planning basis and the design of the first buildings will first be completed.
