
The German wind turbine manufacturer Nordex has been shopping with the Hinnerup-based company R&D Test Systems and has ordered a so-called power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) test bench, which is intended for testing the electrical part of drive lines and their conformity with the power grid.
The test bench contains a power grid emulator, which enables Nordex to simulate many different conditions on the power grid, including voltage and frequency variations, voltage fluctuations, weak power grid conditions and power grid faults, without the need to test in the field, R&D Test states Systems in a message.
The test bench was developed and constructed by R&D Test Systems. It is equipped with advanced measurement and control systems that allow real-time monitoring and emulation of the behavior of the power grid
- Traditionally, grid compliance testing is performed in the field with a wind turbine prototype, which can be time-consuming and challenging. The new power emulator test bench gives Nordex full control over the test scenarios and schedule, allowing more controlled and repeatable testing, says Gregor Krause, project manager at R&D Test Systems.
By investing in the PHIL test bench, Nordex future-proofs its testing strategy and ensures that the company's wind turbine systems meet the necessary requirements for integration with the electricity grid and compliance with grid codes.
The platform will also enable Nordex to test a wide range of different electric powertrains for wind turbines and even other grid loads such as batteries or electrolysis, which ensures that they can also be integrated with the wind turbines and the power grids
The remaining bench is scheduled to be delivered to Nordex during 2024.
