Not-in-my-backyard is a well-known and probably also feared challenge for many local politicians. But according to a new report by Norstat for Gate 21, the think tank Mandag Morgen and the Climate Alliances in the Capital Region and Region Zealand, there is generally broad support for the green transition and for municipalities to become even more involved.

More than half of those surveyed said they want even more climate action from municipalities, while only one in 20 believes that the municipality should be less involved in the green transition.

In general, Danes also believe that their municipality is taking climate action. 40 percent of citizens agree with this to some extent, while only five percent agree with this to a great extent. 27 percent believe that their municipality is only taking climate action to a lesser extent, while four percent believe that this is not the case at all.

- It is Christiansborg that sets the goals and framework, but it is locally that the potential for action exists. Right now, a revised climate target is being considered, while the financial room for manoeuvre since the last general election has been adjusted upwards by more than 40 billion kroner towards 2030. We hope that the study will give the politicians at Christiansborg the opportunity to give the municipalities the right framework to execute on the climate agenda, says Sofus Rex, director of Gate 21.

The study also shows that Danes are generally willing to accept that energy plants are established near their homes.

In general, citizens have the greatest support for the establishment of large offshore wind farms. Here, 58 percent of respondents answered that they are either to a great extent or very much willing to accept large offshore wind farms near their homes.

Next, there is the greatest support for solar parks (48 percent) and onshore wind turbines (40 percent), while there is the lowest support for underground CO2 storage (35 percent) and biogas plants in the local area (25 percent).
