Et nyt internationalt konsortium vil sikre, at fx Bornholmslinjen i fremtiden kan tanke grønne brændstoffer på Bornholm. Mere end 60.000 skibe passerer hvert år Bornholm i Østersøen.

International consortium wants to turn Bornholm into a green gas station

Ørsted, Port of Rønne, Haldor Topsøe and Bornholmslinjen are part of the Bornholm Bunker Hub, which will investigate the possibilities of green fuels for shipping in the Baltic Sea.

It didn't take long for the recommendations from the regional growth teams to be taken up by the business community. Growth Team Bornholm had proposed that Bornholm should be made into a large green test center for, among other things, sustainable fuels and, in the long term, make the island a green hub for shipping traffic in the Baltic Sea.

That ambition has now come closer, as the international consortium Bornholm Bunker Hub will investigate the possibility of establishing a filling station with green marine fuel on Bornholm.

- Bornholm is passed daily by many ships from all over the Baltic Sea area. It is obvious to have the idea of a bunker hub on Bornholm and to investigate the possibility and potential for creating a sustainable business in the future, says Carsten Jensen, CEO of Bornholmslinjen.

The Bornholm Bunker Hub consortium has just initiated a feasibility study to clarify the economic potential of delivering sustainable fuels in the Baltic Sea, fuels produced using offshore wind energy.

From wind turbines to shipping

The project will investigate the possibility of how local Power-to-X can support the need for sustainable fuels for the more than 60,000 ships that pass Bornholm in the middle of the Baltic Sea every year.

- We see great potential in utilizing Bornholm as an energy island to meet the Danish government's ambitious goals to reduce CO2 emissions. Denmark has a unique opportunity to create an industrial strength position in the production of sustainable fuels for heavy transport and create jobs in the process, says Anders Nordstrøm, head of Ørsted's hydrogen and Power-to-X department.

- Bornholm's strategic location makes it ideal as a hub for green energy solutions, and we look forward to exploring the potential for delivering sustainable fuels for shipping from Bornholm, adds Anders Nordstrøm.

In addition to Ørsted, Molslinjen, Haldor Topsoe, Bunker Holding Group, Wärtsilä, Rambøll, Bureau Veritas and Port of Roenne A/S are also part of the consortium.

Attractive for the entire region

It is not only interesting for Denmark. The project should benefit the entire Baltic Sea region, including Sweden, Poland and Germany, which is also reflected in the participants in the project, which includes partners from Belgium and Norway.

- We see the Bornholm Bunker Hub initiative as very interesting in relation to our ongoing development of multifuel engines and testing of future clean fuels for shipping. We are really looking forward to the experiences that participation in such a forward-looking consortium will give us, says Cato Esperø, Sales Manager for Wärtsilä in Norway.

- The Bornholm project brings together all relevant stakeholders to make this happen. At Bureau Veritas, we will support this exciting project by providing technical and regulatory expertise for the safe storage and handling of alternative green fuels and by addressing the certification of these fuels to the origin, adds Gijsbert de Jong, Marine Chief Executive Nordics at Belgian Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore.
