There was really bad news for the green industry in Denmark when the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities, at the request of the Danish Energy Agency, put the open door scheme, which has existed since 1999, on hold, thereby sidelining the processing of offshore wind projects for over 20 GW. The decision was made due to doubts about whether the scheme was in conflict with EU legislation.
The decision has caused waves. Among others, Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard (M) has been called in for consultation on the matter. Internationally, CEO of WindEurope, Giles Dickson, has criticized the decision, which was taken on a Danish initiative and not after an inquiry from the EU.
- This decision is completely absurd – especially at a time when the EU is determined to promote the expansion of renewable energy rather than obstruct it, and is seeking a more flexible approach to what governments can and cannot do to support it, he says.
The same position is held by a number of supporting Danish actors in the form of Green Power Denmark, DI, Dansk Erhverv, Brintbranchen, Danske Rederier and Forsikring & Pension. Together, they sent a letter to the Prime Minister, the Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Acting Minister of Defense on Thursday, urging them to resume processing the open door applications while the possible legal problems are clarified in parallel, Green Power Denmark said in a statement.
The letter lists a number of problems that the closure of the open door scheme entails. In addition, the parties also invite the government to close the green summit on February 21.
"We hope and believe that the government will do everything possible to achieve the climate goals, ensure Danish and European security of supply and independence from Russian energy, and strengthen the foundation for a continued competitive wind industry in Denmark," the letter states, among other things, which can be read here.
The parties have also placed a number of advertisements in newspapers with the same message.
