The EU Commission proposes to phase out Russian gas by the end of 2027. This must be done in cooperation with the member states.

At the same time, the EU must become independent of Russian oil and nuclear energy.

This is stated in the RepowerEU roadmap proposal, which EU Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen presented at a press conference on Tuesday.

- Today, the EU is showing strength and determination. The message to Russia is clear: you must no longer blackmail our member states.

- Your gas will be banned. Your shadow fleet will be stopped, says Dan Jørgensen about the proposal, which will also do away with Russian oil and nuclear energy.

Tuesday's roadmap is a follow-up to the major plan for energy supply in the EU called RepowerEU, which was presented in 2022.

The new roadmap sets out nine concrete measures to ensure a "coordinated and step-by-step approach" to the phasing out of Russian energy.

The roadmap will be followed up next month by legislative proposals covering oil, gas and nuclear energy.

The EU Commission will instruct EU countries to draw up national plans for the phasing out of Russian energy before the end of this year.

The involvement of the member states must ensure that the phasing out takes place with respect for the individual countries' circumstances and without unnecessarily affecting citizens and companies' access to energy.
