While climate and the environment were at the top of the agenda during Ursula von der Leyen's first term as President of the European Commission, there is now more emphasis on making Europe's industry profitable. The European Commission will protect both the oceans and coastal communities with a new strategy presented in Brussels on Thursday. The European Ocean Pact contains a total of six priorities, says European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

- This comprehensive strategy will protect the ocean and promote a sustainable blue economy. It will benefit not only the planet, but also the people who call the coast their home, says Ursula von der Leyen.

The European Ocean Pact brings together a number of well-known plans and adds new ones. Among the six initiatives is a revision of directives in the marine area. The aim is to better support EU countries' work to restore damaged coastal and marine habitats.

To strengthen the EU's maritime industry, the European Commission will present a new maritime strategy and a new EU ports strategy. The Commission is also preparing to evaluate the Common Fisheries Policy.

The EU Commission will also present a strategy for "development and resilience" in the EU's coastal communities.

The EU Commission is thus placing a high priority on income opportunities in the strategy. This is according to Executive Vice-President of the EU Commission, Raffaele Fitto.

- Around 40 percent of Europeans live within 50 kilometers of the sea. Our coastal communities are the backbone of our society and economy. The European Ocean Pact will give coastal communities, islands and outermost regions the opportunity to create a more prosperous future for all, says Raffaele Fitto.

Ursula von der Leyen will present the European Ocean Pact at the upcoming UN Ocean Conference on 9 June. By 2027, the European Commission will then present legislation to ensure that the objectives of the pact are achieved.

The Commission will also establish a so-called Ocean Board. It will bring together representatives from various ocean-related sectors. The aim is for them to help lead the implementation of the Ocean Charter.
