Colombia is the world's sixth largest exporter of coal, and the coal industry employs more than 100,000 Colombians. However, the country also has green ambitions, and is, among other things, dependent on hydropower. Weather phenomena are a challenge for the South American country, for example, the weather phenomenon El Niño has been responsible for extreme drought in the country.

Therefore, the country needs to expand its energy planning. Here, solar and wind energy can play a greater role. Offshore wind can, among other things, come into play in the Caribbean Sea, and Colombia is also a member of the global, Danish-led wind alliance "Global Offshore Wind Alliance", which is working to increase global ambitions for offshore wind.

Denmark has also assisted the country in the development of Latin America's first offshore wind tender, but the need for exchange of experience has not diminished since. Therefore, the Danish Energy Agency recently had an employee in Colombia to share Danish experiences with offshore wind. The agency states this in a post on its LinkedIn profile.

- Colombia has huge potential for offshore wind off the Caribbean coast, but it is important that the expansion gets off to a good start. Their offshore wind tender is Latin America's first and will set the bar for both Colombia and the entire region, says advisor at the Danish Energy Agency's Center for Global Advice, Mikkel Kamp Hansen, who has just returned from Colombia. He continues:

- To make the market attractive going forward, there should be minimal risk associated with developing offshore wind projects, and a well-designed first offshore wind tender will contribute to that. That is why we are supporting it with Danish experience, so that the development of offshore wind will hopefully be a success.

The collaboration with Colombia is one of 24 country collaborations on green energy transition that Denmark has with countries around the world.
