The Danish Energy Agency is now inviting potential bidders to a market dialogue to optimize the tender framework for the future energy island in the North Sea. In total, the Danish Energy Agency will invite up to ten private actors to participate in virtual dialogue meetings.

The reason for the open invitation is that in connection with the publication of the agreement regarding the energy island project, it was proposed that the ownership of the energy island should be shared between a private co-owner and the Danish state. However, the Danish state must be the majority owner, as it is critical infrastructure.

The market dialogue concerns co-ownership of the Energy Island in the North Sea, and will not address conditions for the establishment of wind farms and electricity transmission connections.

Interested parties have until March 16 to invite themselves to a meeting with the Danish Energy Agency about the energy island. The Danish Energy Agency will convene a meeting with the selected parties, and the meetings will subsequently take place in the period from 22-26 March.

The virtual meetings with potential bidders will contribute knowledge about how the project schedule can be optimized, shared ownership can be structured, how a dammed island can be constructed, and how the project as a whole will be a profitable investment for both the private co-owner and the Danish state. The dialogue will ensure that the framework for the tender is optimized in order to ultimately obtain the best and most qualified bids possible.

The Danish Energy Agency expects to invite another market dialogue in the fourth quarter of 2021, where the more specific tender framework is expected to be determined.

The agreement on the energy island was adopted by a broad majority in the Folketinget in February. The artificial island that will form the energy island will be located 80 kilometers out in the North Sea.

The energy island will be the largest construction project in Danish history with a price tag of DKK 210 billion. Initially, it will have an initial capacity of 3 GW from connected offshore wind farms, but in the long term it will be possible to expand it to a capacity of 10 GW.
