TØNDER: The decision on 22 wind turbine projects in Tønder Municipality, all of which have been voted down in indicative referendums, will not be made during this election period. An extraordinary meeting of the Climate, Growth and Development Committee, which was supposed to take place on Thursday, has been cancelled after Mayor Jørgen Popp Petersen decided that the matter will not be discussed in the municipal council as planned. According to an internal email that the media has gained access to, committee chairman Thomas Ørting Jørgensen (V) is asking the municipal director to cancel the meeting. He states that the mayor has decided that the prioritization of wind turbine projects from the third application round will not be discussed at the municipal council meeting on December 18. It was otherwise announced that the matter would be discussed this year, when the projects were sent out for public judgment in June.
The cancellation means that there will be no political discussion of the 22 projects or the results of the local referendums on Thursday. Instead, the matter will be handed over to the newly elected municipal council, which will take office on January 1. The decision comes after several weeks of debate and an open split in the Social Democrats. The municipal council meeting itself on Thursday will take place as planned, but without the wind turbine debate, it is expected to proceed without major political drama.
