Danish District Heating comments on the Government's new climate targets for 2035.
Jesper Voldgaard, Dansk Fjernvarme

The government's 2035 climate target receives lukewarm reception from the district heating sector

Danish District Heating considers the government's target of 82 percent reduction in 2035 too low and calls for more ambitious initiatives in the green transition.

The district heating sector is ready to contribute to a climate-neutral future, but Danish District Heating finds it regrettable that the government's new climate target for 2035 only amounts to a reduction of 82 percent. The organization believes that a more ambitious target could ensure the necessary development towards climate neutrality more quickly.

- We had hoped for a more ambitious climate target for 2035, and I believe we need a more ambitious target, otherwise we are going to make it more difficult than necessary to fully achieve the goal of becoming both climate-neutral and also negative. But we also note that the target for 2035 is a political direction, but that in the new year, 2026, we can and should continue to work on finding additional measures that can lead us towards the target of climate neutrality in 2045, says Kim Mortensen, director of Dansk Fjernvarme, in a press release.

According to Dansk Fjernvarme, CO2 capture should play a central role in the work of achieving the climate goals, and more funds should be allocated to new CCS pools and a better risk distribution should be created between the state and the municipal owners. At the same time, the organization emphasizes that the phasing out of gas in Danish homes remains crucial to achieving both the 2030 and 2035 targets.

- That target is wavering because political uncertainty has been created about the gas phasing out. Therefore, it is still necessary to look at the phasing out of gas in space heating in order not to miss important CO2 reductions in both the 2030 target and the 2035 target, says Kim Mortensen, CEO of Dansk Fjernvarme.
