The US's announced ten percent tariff on goods from countries around the world will be raised to 15 percent. This is what US President Donald Trump writes on the social media Truth Social.

The announcement comes the day after the US Supreme Court declared that the increased tariffs that Trump imposed last year were illegal.

- Please let this statement serve as an expression that I, as President of the United States, will immediately raise the global ten percent tariff on countries, many of which have ripped off the United States for decades without retaliation (until I came along!), to the fully authorized and legally tested level of 15 percent, Trump writes.

According to Trump, the decision to raise the general tariff was made after a "thorough, detailed and complete" review of the Supreme Court's decision. He describes the Supreme Court's ruling as "ridiculous, poorly written and extraordinarily anti-American".

The new tariff rate will take effect immediately. The tariff rates, which were introduced last year and which the US Supreme Court has declared illegal, varied from country to country. In the case of the EU, among others, the tariff rates have been changed after negotiations with the US.

Following the Supreme Court's ruling on Friday, Trump announced a general tariff of ten percent, which has now been changed to 15 percent. The ten percent tariff was to take effect on February 24 and apply for 150 days.

It is unclear why the 15 percent tariff according to Trump - in contrast to the previously announced tariff rate - can take effect immediately.

When the US president last year imposed punitive tariffs with varying rates, he did so in reference to the International Emergency Economic Powers (IEEPA) law.

The law is designed for national emergencies, but according to the country's Supreme Court, it does not give the president the authority to impose increased tariffs. Trump imposed the punitive tariffs because he believed that the United States' trade deficit with a large number of countries constituted an emergency.

When the new ten percent tariff was announced on Friday, according to the White House, it was done with reference to section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974. Whether this is the same law that the increased tariff rate is based on is not clear from the president's post on Truth Social.

It is also unknown whether all goods are covered by the 15 percent tariff. A number of product groups were exempted from the ten percent tariff. This applied, among other things, to pharmaceuticals, critical minerals and certain agricultural products.
