COPENHAGEN: One of the last stones on the road to the construction of the Aflandshage Wind Farm in Øresund has now been cleared. Thus, the Danish Energy Agency has now approved Hofor's application to establish the offshore wind farm, which is to be located in the southern Øresund in an area approximately ten km from Amager's southern tip and just over eight km from north-eastern Stevns. This is stated by Hofor in a press release.

The wind farm will consist of 26 offshore wind turbines with a total height of up to 220 meters to the top of the blade. The project has a total output of 300 MW and will be able to supply up to 300,000 households with green electricity.

- I am proud that Hofor with the Aflandshage Wind Farm can help ensure that the metropolitan area can take the lead in the green transition, says Susanne Juhl, who is chairman of the board at Hofor.

Two hearings

The establishment permit was granted on the basis of a public hearing that ran over the summer. It is the second time that the public has been consulted about Aflandshage Windmill Park. The first consultation was carried out over the winter of 2021/2022 and was about the project's environmental impact assessment.

Since the first hearing, Hofor has made a number of choices, among other things based on the concerns and proposals.

Among other things on the basis of the consultations, the company has chosen the largest possible turbines that the environmental study allows, since it was requested in the consultation responses that the fewest turbines possible be installed. There is also a focus on creating foundations that provide the opportunity to create an artificial stone reef around the turbines for the benefit of marine biology in Øresund and Køge Bay.

Furthermore, the wind farm's transformer station will be located on land at the Avedøre plant - and not at sea. This means that there must not be a large, fixed structure in the mill area.

The number of consultation responses to the second consultation round has also been significantly fewer than the first. Here, the Danish Energy Agency has received 64 consultation responses compared to 91 in the first round. Susanne Juhl believes this is an expression that the dialogue has worked and that it has provided the basis for a good process.

- At the same time, I am happy that through two consultation processes we have been in dialogue with citizens and neighboring municipalities, and that it is possible to meet at least some of the concerns that have been raised.

The concerns in the consultation responses have mainly revolved around a visual impact and the possible impact on bird migration over the Øresund

Political support

The process and the approval also bring joy to the office of the Lord Mayor in Copenhagen, as the wind farm can contribute to the municipality's climate ambitions.

- In Copenhagen, we have set a number of ambitious goals to make the capital greener. We are working hard to become CO2 neutral as soon as possible. And with the aim of becoming a climate-positive capital in 2035. That is why I am very happy that HOFOR will create large amounts of new, green and renewable energy with Aflandshage Windmill Park, which will benefit the green transition and consumers in the capital area and the Øresund region, says Sophie Hæstorp Andersen (S), who is Lord Mayor of Copenhagen.

According to the plan, Aflandshage Wind Farm is to be fully operational in 2026.
