Denmark is among the 20 countries that have historically emitted the most CO2 per capita. This is shown by calculations based on data from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. Since 1850, Denmark has emitted 1,131 tons of CO2 per capita – three times the world average. The list is topped by Iceland, with Australia and the USA in the following places. This is reported by DR.
- We are actually one of the EU countries that ranks very high, and this is partly because we have used a lot of coal in our energy supply for many years, says Mikael Skou Andersen, a professor at Aarhus University at the Department of Environmental Science.
The calculations only cover official emissions and not climate footprints from imports and air travel, which according to researchers would increase Denmark's real footprint by around 50 percent. Mikael Skou Andersen and professor at CBS's Center for Sustainability Andreas Rasche believe that the high historical emissions oblige Denmark to increase climate support. In 2023, Denmark provided around 8 billion DKK in climate financing. Climate Minister Lars Aagaard (M) rejects the need to increase the contribution and points out that Denmark is already high in terms of development assistance.
