RWE completes installation of UK's first large-scale deployment of reusable blades

150 reusable blades make up half of the blades in the Sofia Offshore Wind Farm in the British part of the North Sea.

RWE has reached a key milestone in the British project Sofia Offshore Wind Farm, where the installation of 150 reusable Siemens Gamesa blades has now been completed. This means that the reusable blades are fitted to 50 of the project's 100 turbines. The remaining turbines will have traditionally manufactured blades. In total, more than 60 percent of the turbines are now installed. This is what RWE writes.

According to the company, the 150 blades mark the first large-scale deployment of the technology in the UK. The project is expected to reach commercial operation in the third quarter of 2026. The turbines, each 252 meters high, will deliver a combined capacity of 1.4 GW when the project is completed.

- The latest progress in construction marks an important moment for RWE and Sofia. RWE continues to deliver one of the UK's largest offshore wind projects and is working closely and safely with our partners to achieve our goals. Sofia remains on track to complete the turbine installation during the first half of next year, and we expect full commercial operation in the third quarter of 2026, says Tobias Keitel, Technical Director of RWE Offshore Wind.

The reusable blades are manufactured by Siemens Gamesa in Hull and are based on a specially developed resin in the composite material, which makes it possible to separate and recycle the materials at the end of their service life. The technology has previously been used at the Kaskasi project in Germany. RWE also plans to install reusable blades on selected turbines at the Thor project in Denmark.

When the Sofia Offshore Wind Farm is fully operational, the park is expected to be able to supply electricity equivalent to the consumption of around 1.2 million British households.
