Some inquisitive and critical students welcome Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) and Minister of Education Mattias Tesfaye (S), who will visit Tårnby Gymnasium in Copenhagen on Friday.

The first question from Asger from 3rd grade is why the Prime Minister is canceling the COP30 climate summit in Brazil, when it is important for driving forward the climate policy agenda.

- Do you think the municipal elections are more important than climate change, the Prime Minister is asked, which generates applause.

He refers to the fact that last year she herself had given a list to the heads of state and government who missed the climate summit at that time.

The Prime Minister emphasizes that she has previously participated in a number of climate summits.

She has two basic reasons for her absence, including that she values the municipal elections on November 18 more than taking the long trip to Brazil.

- The most important thing is what precedes the summit and not so much what happens at the summit. We hold the presidency of the EU, and there we have fought very hard for emissions to be reduced by 2040. Fortunately, we succeeded a few days ago. The second thing is somewhat impractical. The meeting is being held in Brazil. It really takes a long time to get there and back, and I think, among other things, that it is important to participate in the municipal elections and, for example, participate here today, she says.

Criticizing other state leaders last year

It is unusual that the Danish Prime Minister is not participating in the climate summit. As the country holding the EU presidency, the Danish presidency managed to get a climate agreement in place before the summit a few days ago.

Europe is among the driving forces in climate issues, and it is therefore important that Denmark reached an agreement on 90 percent less emissions by 2040.

Last year, Mette Frederiksen expressed her disappointment that heads of state from other countries cancelled COP29 in Azerbaijan.

- I am here myself because I think it is important that we are someone who continues to push the international climate agenda, she said.

- There are lots of different explanations for the cancellations. But we can at least note that there are not as many as usual. I hope it will look different next year, she said last year.
