RWE has completed the installation of the turbine foundations for the 1.1 gigawatt Thor Offshore Wind Farm in the North Sea. In September, the last of 72 foundations was installed, and at the end of last week, the completion of the steel structures followed. The offshore work was completed in less than six months with the installation vessel MPI Adventure and coordinated from the Port of Thyborøn. This is according to RWE.
- Thor Offshore Wind Farm is progressing very well, and the offshore work is proceeding according to plan. We look forward to starting the installation of the turbines next year, which will mark the next major milestone in the realization of Denmark's largest offshore wind farm to date, says Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind.
To protect the foundations from the harsh conditions at sea, reusable covers have been installed, and already in July the 2,600-ton transformer station was placed on its foundation.
The first turbines are expected to be sailed from the Port of Esbjerg in the spring of 2026. Thor will be the first offshore wind farm in the world to use 36 steel towers with a lower CO2 footprint than conventional towers, and some of the turbines will be equipped with reusable blades. When the farm is fully operational in 2027, it will be able to supply over one million Danish households with electricity.
RWE also expects that the operation of the park will create 50 to 60 local jobs in a new service building at Thorsminde Harbour, which is expected to be completed in early 2026. Thor Offshore Wind Park is owned by RWE with 51 percent and Norges Bank Investment Management with 49 percent. RWE is responsible for construction and operation throughout the park's lifetime.
