Green Power Denmark: Don't ignore the silent majority for renewable energy in the municipal election campaign

Polls show that a majority of Danes support wind turbines and solar cells. This must not be forgotten even though the critics are the ones making the most noise, says Green Power Denmark.

Danes are generally positive about the expansion of renewable energy. An analysis from ClimAct under the Queen Mary Center shows that six out of ten say yes to wind turbines nearby, while support for solar parks is 63 percent. TrygFonden's security survey from 2024 also shows that three out of four Danes accept new wind turbines in their municipality. This is stated by Green Power Denmark in a statement.

According to the business organization, Aarhus is a current example of this development. A survey from Epinion for Constructive Institute shows that 44 percent of Aarhus residents are positive about four planned wind turbines at Aarhus Harbour, while 36 percent are neutral and 20 percent are against. The survey follows the city council's discussions on energy projects at the East Harbour, which include fills in connection with the current municipal election campaign.

- I am pleased to see that so many Aarhusians support wind turbines at Aarhus Harbour. This shows once again that the Danes are positively disposed towards more green energy in their municipality. It is worth remembering that in the run-up to a municipal election, the rhetoric is often characterised by strong emotions when the debates come to be about specific projects in the municipalities, says Camilla Holbech, director of renewable energy at Green Power Denmark.

Several local surveys show that even though the critics often occupy the largest part of the public debate, a majority of the population is behind the expansion of renewable energy. The figures collectively indicate that support for wind turbines and solar cells is significantly broader than the public debate often gives the impression, is the assessment from Camilla Holbech. She therefore warns city council politicians against making citizen resistance a hot topic.

- The opponents can fill a disproportionate amount of the debate compared to the silent majority that supports green energy. That is why it is important that our city council politicians have the courage to support more wind turbines and solar cells. We will need them - not only in the climate fight, but also to maintain competitiveness and security of supply in an increasingly uncertain world, she says.
