Aabenraa Municipality has adopted a local plan and municipal plan supplement for the expansion of Energinet's high-voltage substation Kassø west of Aabenraa. This is according to Energinet.
The expansion will be an extension of the current substation north of Kassøvej at Rødekro. The substation area will grow from approximately 12 hectares to approximately 135 hectares. The existing 400/150 kV substation will be closed down, while a new 400 kV substation and two 150 kV substations will be built.
- We will expand the substation, as the existing substation Kassø no longer meets the need. This is because we need to transport much more electricity and connect more renewable energy in the area. There are various actors in the local area who have plans to establish renewable energy. In addition, there are planned projects that will increase electricity consumption in the area, says Henrik Jørgensen, senior project manager at Energinet.
The project also involves changes to electricity cables and masts in the area. Energinet is now awaiting an environmental permit, and work is expected to start next year. Station Kassø is a central hub in the Danish transmission network and plays a significant role in the security of supply in Western Denmark as well as for the electricity exchange with Germany, where seven 400 kV connections meet – four of them across the border.
- It will be Denmark's largest transformer station, both in terms of area and capacity, says Henrik Jørgensen.
Fences will be erected around the high-voltage station, and vegetation will be planted to reduce the visual impact. The three new stations will cover a total of around 50 hectares, while the rest of the area will be laid out as a recreational area with public access. Energinet is in dialogue with local councils about the use of the area.
The two 150 kV stations are scheduled to be operational in 2028, while the 400 kV station will be put into operation gradually from 2029 to 2033.
