Red parties call the government's new climate target proposals embarrassing

The government proposes a new climate target for 2035 of 82 percent reduction, but red parties demand more.

The red parties are disappointed with the government, which proposes that Denmark reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 82 percent compared to emissions in 1990. This comes after long internal discussions between the government parties, which have a political majority. But a number of parties and green organizations are disappointed with the government's ambitions.

- We can almost reach the climate target that the government wants to set without doing anything at all. It is therefore too lazy, says climate spokesperson Signe Munk (SF) in a written comment.

She believes that this is the same as saying that no more climate policy should be adopted in the next ten years, because projections show that we are close to reaching the target in percentage terms, even if no more is done. The Radical Party agrees with that interpretation.

- I am glad that the government is finally starting negotiations on a climate target for 2035 - but I am very angry that the government is introducing an unambitious target of 82 percent, says climate spokesperson Samira Nawa (R) in a written comment.

The government is ready to move

According to Climate Minister Lars Aagaard (M), the government is ready to move in the discussions with the parties in the Folketing, and he suggests that they can agree on a target of between 82 and 85 percent reduction. The government wants to allocate four billion kroner annually to achieve the new target.

The Radical Party and the Unity List both propose a reduction of 90 percent.

- The government is failing the climate, its responsibility and the letter of the Climate Act. It is completely embarrassing. The Climate Act begins by stating that Denmark has a historical and moral responsibility to lead the way. The government is failing miserably by setting the bar so low, says climate rapporteur Leila Stockmarr (EL) in a written comment.

The Danish Parliament has already adopted climate targets for 2030 of 70 percent reduction and for 2050 of 100 percent. Based on the Danish Energy Agency's Climate Projection, the think tank Concito has assessed that Denmark will achieve an 80 percent reduction in 2035 with current political initiatives.

According to the projection of Denmark's CO2 emissions and climate efforts, this is therefore a minor upward adjustment. But it is expensive, because it is becoming more and more difficult to cut emissions, according to the minister.

The Alternative calls the government's proposal "insanely unambitious".

- In Denmark, we have the resources to be fully climate neutral by 2035, and we see an 80 percent reduction in 2035 just by the policy pursued.

- Therefore, a target of two additional percentage points is almost the same as not setting a target at all, says party leader Francisca Rosenkilde from the Alternative in a written comment.
