It is a technological breakthrough in green energy when the Krigers Flak Combined Grid Solution is put into trial operation for the first time today.
The connection goes through the Danish Krigers Flak and the German Baltic 1 and 2, thus connecting the Danish and German electricity grids, which ties the two countries' electricity systems more closely together and makes it easier to exchange electricity between the countries.
- The joint connection through offshore wind farms between Denmark and Germany marks a milestone in the green transition, says Climate Minister Dan Jørgensen (S).
The new connection runs from Bjæverskov in Denmark to Betwisch near Rostock in Germany. A double converter station is being built in Germany, as Zealand and Germany each belong to their own synchronous area and "therefore do not fluctuate at the same electrical rate," writes the Danish Energy Agency.
The new connection shows the way for the upcoming energy islands, which will also send power to both the Danish electricity grid and to neighboring countries.
- When we connect offshore wind farms and exchange power with each other through them, we help to connect Europe in a new, green way. At the same time, the new technology can contribute important experience to the upcoming Danish energy islands, which will supply green power in the North Sea and on Bornholm, says the minister.
Energinet and German 50Hertz are responsible for the new Krigers Flak Combined Grid Solution, which consists of a 400 MW submarine cable. This is the first time that two nations' electricity grids have been connected through offshore wind farms.
- The Combined Grid Solution is not just a milestone towards Denmark's goal of 100 percent green electricity system in 2030. The groundbreaking project is also an important piece when we are to reduce CO2 emissions in the rest of society, says Thomas Egebo, Managing Director of Energinet.
Baltic 1 and 2 have a total capacity of 336 MW, while Krigers Flak is expected to have a capacity of 600 MW when the park is put into operation next year.
