Denmark's largest offshore wind farm is ready to deliver green electricity

In the long term, Kriegers Flak will be able to deliver 600 MW, which corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of 600,000 households.

After several years of preparation, electricity will soon be able to be sent to Danish homes from the Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea.

This is as a result of the energy company Vattenfall, which is responsible for establishing and operating Kriegers Flak, having established part of the farm and now also received the necessary permits from the Danish Energy Agency.

The farm is thus ready to supply green electricity to Danish homes, the Danish Energy Agency informs. The first electricity from Kriegers Flak is expected to be delivered to the Danish electricity grid at the end of January or the beginning of February this year.

After this, the wind turbines will be continuously connected to the electricity grid until the entire farm is connected. The entire farm must be fully connected by the end of 2021 at the latest. In the long term, it is expected that the farm will be able to supply what corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 600,000 households.

This is approximately 50 percent more electricity than the largest offshore wind farm in Denmark to date, Horns Rev 3.

Valid for 25 years

According to Vattenfall CEO Jacob Nørgaard Andersen, Kriegers Flak will make "a significant contribution to the already impressive wind production in Denmark".

- It also signals that the exploitation of the Baltic Sea's huge potential for offshore wind is now really taking off, he says in a written comment.

The permits to supply the green electricity are valid for 25 years, from the time the first energy is delivered to the electricity grid from the offshore wind farm. This means that Kriegers Flak will be able to supply green electricity to Denmark at least until 2046.

The establishment of Kriegers Flak is part of the energy policy agreement from March 2012. The task of establishing and operating the farm was put out to tender in 2015. Vattenfall later won that tender.
